What is Agile PM?

The Agile Project Management™ (Agile PM®) certification aims to address the needs of those working in a project-focused environment who want to be Agile.

Based on the proven fundamentals within DSDM (Dynamic Systems Development Methodology), the certification provides the ability to deliver Agile Projects in organisations requiring standards, rigour and visibility around Project Management, while at the same time enabling the fast pace, change and empowerment provided by Agile.

Philosophy:

The Agile PM philosophy is that any project must be aligned to clearly defined strategic goals and focus upon early delivery of real benefits to the business. Stakeholders are prepared to accept a fit-for-purpose solution and realise that change is inevitable. Agile PM welcomes change because it reflects a greater understanding of the business need and delivers a better solution.

Principles:

The eight principles within Agile PM support the Project Management Philosophy. If the principles are not engaged then the full benefits will be undermined. The principles are:

  1. Focus on the business need
  2. Deliver on time
  3. Collaborate
  4. Never compromise quality
  5. Build incrementally from firm foundations
  6. Develop iteratively
  7. Communicate continuously and clearly
  8. Demonstrate control

Processes:

There is a process flow embedded within Agile PM with the following phases:

  1. Pre-Project (Terms of Reference)
  2. Feasibility (Outline Business Case, Team structure, Risk analysis, Prototype......)
  3. Foundations (Strategies, Project/Delivery plan, Project registers ......)
  4. Exploration (Business functions defined and delivered ......)
  5. Engineering (Technical considerations delivered ......)
  6. Deployment (Documentation, Training and Solution [or part solution] delivered ......)
  7. Post-Project (Project Business Benefits assessed ......)

The project many have a number of stages / increments which will have their own Deployment phase. Once an increment has been deployed the organisation can start reaping the benefits whilst the next increment is being developed.

People:

The roles within an Agile PM project fall into two distinct groups:

  • Project Governance (Business Sponsor, Business Visionary, Technical Coordinator, and Project Manager) whose role is to ensure the project aligns with the business vision and business strategies.
  • Development Team (Team Leader, Business Ambassador, Business Analyst, Solution Developer, and Solution Tester) whose role is to develop, test and deliver the required solution.

Products:

There are 17 management products that help define strategy, plans and progress. However, as each project is different, not all management products will be applicable to every project.

Practices:

The following practical techniques are available to Agile PM projects;

  1. Facilitated workshops
  2. MoSCow prioritisation of use requirements
  3. Iterative development (homing in on the best solution)
  4. Modelling (models and prototypes help understanding)
  5. Timeboxing (allows delivery of the solution on the agreed date)
