Wedded bliss: PRINCE2 + Microsoft Project

“PRINCE and Project go about things in a completely different way,” explains Paul Atkin, Advantage Learning’s chief executive. “So you have to know how to create a happy marriage from the two different bed fellows: how to organize your Microsoft Project file so that it synchronizes with a PRINCE2’s plan and PRINCE2’s product based planning technique.”

“You need someone to guide you through the maze once and then it’s pretty straightforward – and that’s what our ‘Using Microsoft Project with PRINCE2’ course was devised to do,” says Paul, who delivers the course.

Using Microsoft Project with PRINCE2

The one-day course is aimed at people who are familiar with PRINCE2 (at least working in a PRINCE2 environment) and have some basic knowledge of the Project software.

It has been specifically created to show PRINCE2 project managers how to make the software really work for them. “It is not an introductory course to either, it is showing you how to make them work together.”

He adds: “Once you’ve structured the program correctly, you can then pull out different reports at different levels, for either the project manager, or create quick milestone level executive reports for the project board.”

The course calls on Paul’s deep understanding of the software, gained from many years of both using it and training it. “Everybody has a ‘why does Project do that’ question – and we make sure there is time in the course to give solutions.”

Although there are bespoke software packages for PRINCE2 project managers, Paul believes the off-the-peg program from Microsoft does the job perfectly well. “There’s enough in MS Project to create and manage anything that PRINCE2 demands. It’s just being able to use it properly and that’s what our course does.”

Advantage Learning runs regular public classes in Scotland and this event can also be delivered in-house. If you would like to find out more about Advantage Learning’s exclusive “Using Microsoft Project with PRINCE2” course, call 0131 668 2445 or contact us for a quick chat.
